Akron Zoo, Wildlife park in Akron, United States.
Akron Zoo is a wildlife facility in Ohio housing more than 1,000 animals representing about 90 species across its grounds. The animals are organized into different zones that recreate their natural habitats.
The zoo began in 1953 on land donated by George and Ann Perkins in 1900, which was originally called Perkins Woods Park. That initial gift made the establishment of this facility possible decades later.
The zoo features distinct areas dedicated to animals from Africa, Asia, and other regions, allowing visitors to experience different wildlife habitats. Each zone shows how animals live in their natural environments across the globe.
Visitors should allow plenty of time to explore the different zones, as the grounds are spacious and there is much to view. Comfortable shoes are important, as is protection from sun or rain depending on the season.
A carousel featuring representations of rare and endangered animals was added in 2010 as a special art installation. It serves both as entertainment and as a way to raise awareness about these species.
