The plaza opened in 1932 following an 87 million dollar bond initiative from 1923 that transformed a former residential area into public space.
The Meeting of the Waters fountain, installed in 1940, represents the Mississippi and Missouri rivers through large figures and mythological creatures.
The park connects to multiple public transit options and provides direct access to Union Station through marked pedestrian crossings.
The central fountain underwent a name change from Wedding of the Waters due to public concerns about the nude figures in the sculpture.
