Aloe Plaza

Aloe Plaza is a 3.35-acre urban park located between Chestnut and Market streets in downtown St. Louis with green spaces and walking paths throughout. The grounds connect directly to Union Station and serve as a transitional space between the station and surrounding neighborhoods.

The plaza was established in 1932 after a major urban development initiative approved in 1923 transformed this former residential area into public green space. This project was part of a broader effort to revitalize downtown St. Louis during that period.

The central fountain depicts two large figures representing the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, surrounded by mythological creatures carved from stone. Visitors can observe the craftsmanship of the sculptures and notice how the waterways are symbolized through the design as they walk around the monument.

The park is easy to reach and well-connected to public transportation options near Union Station, making it convenient for visitors arriving by train or bus. Walking paths are clearly marked and provide safe passage through the grounds and to adjacent areas.

The fountain in the center was originally called Wedding of the Waters but received a new name due to public concerns about the nude figures depicted in the artwork. This earlier title still appears in older references and local memory.
