Hotel Jefferson, listed on the NRHP in St. Louis, Missouri
Hotel Jefferson is a building on North Tucker Boulevard constructed in 1904 as an upscale lodging for city visitors. The 1928 expansion added new spaces including the Gold Room, a performance venue featuring ornate ceiling details and a stage for entertainment.
Constructed in 1904, the building gained prominence as a destination for wealthy visitors, particularly following the World's Fair era. In the mid-20th century, ownership changed hands and its purpose shifted, eventually becoming senior housing by the 1970s before closing in 1975.
The building served as a gathering place for important social events and performances in its early decades, hosting notable figures from the entertainment world. The grand Gold Room with its floating swan sculpture remains a testament to the elegant entertainment space that once drew crowds to downtown.
The building sits near City Hall in a central downtown location easily accessible to the main district. Currently undergoing renovation, visitors should note that access may be limited while the restoration project prepares the structure for its new purpose with shops and dining spaces.
Baseball player Rogers Hornsby made the building his residence from 1923 to 1924, marrying Jeannette Pennington, whom he met there, before the couple moved to a home on the city outskirts. This personal connection links the site to one of the sport's notable figures during the hotel's active years.
