The hotel was built in 1913-1914 and opened in 1914 as a mid-range accommodation for travelers during St. Louis's rapid growth period. It operated as the DeSoto Hotel for decades before Omni Hotels took over in 1997, and the building earned National Register of Historic Places status in 1984.
The building served different kinds of visitors over the decades, from businesspeople to tourists, and hosted social gatherings and community events that shaped its role in downtown life.
