The Syndicate

The Syndicate Trust Building is a 17-story commercial structure featuring detailed terra cotta ornamentation across its facade. It now contains residential units along with ground-floor retail spaces for businesses and services.

The building was constructed in 1907 in the Chicago School style and originally housed the Scruggs-Vandervoort-Barney department store. It underwent major transformation as retail patterns changed and new uses replaced its original purpose.

The building displays early 1900s architectural language through handcrafted terra cotta elements that run from street level to roofline. These ornaments reflect a time when such details were considered essential to a commercial structure's beauty and presence.

The interior combines modern residential spaces with ground-floor retail areas including a grocery store and pharmacy. You can view the building from the street to appreciate the architectural details across its full height.

After years of abandonment, the building underwent extensive renovation between 2006 and 2008, transforming it from empty commercial space into an occupied residential complex. This revival saved a distinctive downtown landmark from deterioration.
