Security Building

The Security Building is an eleven-story office structure in downtown St. Louis featuring a distinctive material composition. Its lower two floors showcase granite, while the upper levels combine pink limestone with brick in their construction.

The structure was built in 1892 by the architectural firm Peabody and Stearns during a period of rapid commercial growth in St. Louis. This project was part of a broader wave of office construction that reflected the city's economic expansion during that era.

The facade combines different materials and colors that reflect the building's age and construction methods from its era. Walking past it, you notice how these design choices made it stand out among other commercial buildings of that time.

The building is located at 319 North Fourth Street in downtown and continues to serve as office space for current tenants. Visitors can admire the exterior design from the street and notice the contrasting materials between the lower and upper facades.

It remains one of only eight tall office structures still standing from over thirty built in St. Louis during the 1890s economic boom. This rarity makes it an important witness to the city's architectural history, as most of its contemporaries have disappeared.
