Armstrong County Courthouse and Jail
Armstrong County Courthouse and Jail, County courthouse and jail in Kittanning, United States
The Armstrong County Courthouse is a two-story brick and stone building with a hipped roof and octagonal bell cupola. A three-story addition built between 1951 and 1953 expanded court functions, while a separate jail facility was constructed with 24 cells for detainees.
The courthouse opened in 1860, marking the beginning of formal judicial infrastructure in the region. The adjacent jail facility was built between 1870 and 1873 to meet growing demands of the criminal justice system.
The building displays Greek Revival features with four Corinthian columns at its front entrance, typical of mid-19th century government buildings in Pennsylvania. These architectural choices reflect how communities wanted to present their institutions at that time.
The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and can be viewed from the exterior to appreciate its architectural features. Visitors should expect the building to be located in downtown Kittanning and may find interior access limited to official business only.
The adjacent jail building features a 96-foot tower constructed from a combination of stone, brick, and iron materials. This distinctive tower structure was a typical security feature for detention facilities of that era.
