The Astor Fur Warehouse features three one-room floors connected by an interior hoist system for transporting fur between different levels.
Built in 1828 by Jean Joseph Rolette, an agent of the American Fur Company, the warehouse operated until the mid-19th century in Prairie du Chien.
The warehouse represents the commercial transition from French and British to American control of the Upper Mississippi fur trade in the early 1800s.
Located at Bolvin and Water Streets on St. Feriole Island, the warehouse now functions as part of the Villa Louis museum complex.
This limestone structure stands as the only remaining fur trade warehouse in the Upper Mississippi Valley, with its original wooden beam separating floor windows.
