Baltimore Coliseum, Sports arena in Baltimore, Maryland
The Baltimore Coliseum was a multipurpose indoor arena at Monroe Street and Windsor Avenue with around 4,500 seats for various sports and entertainment events. The facility hosted basketball, boxing, concerts, and roller skating activities throughout its operation.
The building opened in 1939 and became home to the original Baltimore Bullets basketball team from 1944 to 1954, when the team won a championship. It closed in 1961 after the Baltimore Civic Center opened as a newer replacement facility.
The venue served as a gathering place on Pennsylvania Avenue where boxing matches, concerts, and roller skating events drew crowds from across the city.
The arena was located on Monroe Street in a central downtown area that made it easily accessible to visitors. The building was designed to handle large crowds with multiple entry points throughout the structure.
Boxing champion Archie Moore compiled a remarkable record of 19 wins and only 1 loss at the arena between 1945 and 1951. His exceptional winning streak made the venue one of the notable boxing centers of that era.
