Bull Sluice, Whitewater rapid at Chattooga River, South Carolina and Georgia, United States.
Bull Sluice is a whitewater rapid on the Chattooga River, which runs along the border between South Carolina and Georgia. The water falls over granite boulders in two stages, forming a strong cascade that draws kayakers and rafting groups.
The rapid became widely known after it appeared in the 1972 film Deliverance, which introduced many viewers to whitewater paddling. Since then, it has become a regular destination for paddlers traveling to the Chattooga.
Local kayakers gather at Bull Sluice on weekends to run the drop while onlookers watch from the rocks along the bank. The surrounding granite formations act as natural seating, making it a social spot as much as a paddling one.
The rapid is reached by a short gravel path from US Highway 76, and the walk to the water takes only a few minutes. Several spots along the bank offer a clear view of the cascade, and the rocks around it provide steady footing for watching.
A hidden cavity beneath the main drop allows swimmers to watch kayakers and rafts pass overhead through the water's surface. Few visitors discover this spot even though it sits just beside the main access point.
