Issaqueena Falls, Waterfall in Walhalla, United States.
Issaqueena Falls is a waterfall in South Carolina that drops about 100 feet over granite formations surrounded by forest vegetation. The water creates multiple tiers as it cascades down, forming pools between the ledges.
The waterfall received its name in the 1700s from a Cherokee woman known in local history. The site later developed as a destination within the Sumter National Forest and its surrounding area.
The falls bear a name rooted in Cherokee tradition, connected to a woman who sought shelter behind the cascading water. This historical association remains present in local storytelling and gives the location cultural depth.
The location is accessible by car with a paved walking path from the parking area that takes about 15 to 20 minutes to reach the main falls. The trail is relatively easy and suitable for most visitors of different fitness levels.
Near the falls stands an abandoned railroad tunnel from the mid-1800s that was never completed, creating an unusual combination of natural and industrial remnants. This tunnel and the waterfall together form an unexpected pairing at the same location.
