Ram Cat Alley Historic District, Historic district in downtown Seneca, United States.
Ram Cat Alley Historic District is a historic district with twenty-one commercial buildings in downtown Seneca. Eighteen of these structures retain their original architectural features from the 1887 to 1930 period.
The district developed as a commercial hub connected to railroad expansion in South Carolina during the late 1800s and early 1900s. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 for its role in documenting this period of growth.
The district served as the social gathering place where the community shopped, did business, and attended shows together. The buildings show how daily life and commerce were woven into this central location.
The district is located in downtown Seneca and is easy to explore on foot. You can walk through the area at your own pace to see the different buildings and their details.
The name comes from a large colony of cats that gathered around a meat market in the alley in 1908. These animals became so associated with the place that they gave the district its memorable name.
