Hanover House

Hanover House is a historic colonial-era residence in Clemson featuring French architectural design with a steep roof, thick brick walls, and balanced window arrangements across two stories. The structure was built using cypress wood and handmade brick, materials that have endured for centuries.

Built in 1716, this house was relocated to Clemson University in 1941 and stands as one of the earliest surviving structures from that colonial period. Its preservation marks an important connection to the region's French colonial heritage.

The house shows how French colonists lived and organized their daily routines in early South Carolina. The furnishings and objects inside reveal the habits and domestic patterns of that time period.

Guided tours are available throughout the year at the house through the South Carolina Botanical Garden at Clemson University. The location is accessible by foot within the campus grounds and offers a manageable visit without needing additional transportation.

Original French architectural markings remain visible on wooden beams throughout the building, offering clues about the craftspeople who built it. These handwritten marks are a rare direct connection to the individual artisans from over 300 years ago.
