Clemson Experimental Forest, Experimental forest near Clemson University, South Carolina.
Clemson Experimental Forest is a research and education forest located near Lake Hartwell in South Carolina, managed by Clemson University. The land is divided into three separate sections connected by an extensive trail network open to hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders.
The land was acquired in the 1930s when it had been worn out by years of farming and was in need of recovery. Clemson University gradually transformed it into a managed research forest, planting trees and testing methods that helped restore the soil and native woodland.
Students and researchers from Clemson University use this forest as a working outdoor classroom where different approaches to land and wildlife management can be observed directly. Visitors walking the trails may pass through areas set aside for specific studies, making it possible to see forest management in action rather than just reading about it.
The forest is open year-round, but the trails are most comfortable to walk or ride during the drier months when the ground is firmer. Facilities on site are minimal, so it is worth coming prepared with water and supplies for a self-guided visit.
Unlike most research forests tied to public funding, this one covers its own costs through timber sales and other forest products. This means the forest itself essentially pays for the research and maintenance work carried out within it.
