Calver Island, Archaeological site in Swatara Township, Pennsylvania, United States.
Calver Island is an archaeological site in the Susquehanna River southeast of Harrisburg in Pennsylvania. The island spans about 12 acres and contains multiple layers of deposits that preserve evidence of human settlement spanning thousands of years.
The site formed roughly 5200 years ago when two river shoals merged into a single landform, creating favorable conditions for settlement. The layers reveal continuous use from the Early Archaic through the Late Woodland period.
Archaeological investigations have uncovered numerous artifacts from Early Archaic through Late Woodland periods, documenting continuous Native American occupation patterns.
Access to the island requires permission and coordination with authorities due to the historic site's protected status. Visitors should know that the area is under archaeological control and unauthorized excavations are not permitted.
The site preserves one of Pennsylvania's most complete stratigraphic records with soil samples that reveal details about ancient environmental conditions. These layered deposits allow researchers to reconstruct a precise picture of living conditions across several millennia.
