Camp Grayling, National Guard training facility near Grayling, Michigan
Camp Grayling is a military base in Michigan covering approximately 147,000 acres with forests, open fields, and lakes suitable for different types of exercises. The site is primarily used by the Michigan National Guard but also hosts units from other states and Canada for training operations.
The base was established in 1913 when a local lumberman donated land for military training, with operations beginning in 1914, making it one of the oldest training sites in the US. Over a century of continuous use has developed it into a major facility supporting armed forces preparation.
Visitors should check ahead as access to the base is generally controlled for security reasons and not freely open to the public. Occasional open house events do allow people to view military equipment up close and learn about soldier activities.
The base also serves as a testing ground for new military technology, particularly uncrewed aerial systems and drones. This emerging role makes it a center for developing modern military capabilities alongside its traditional training mission.
