Chateau Grand Traverse, Winery in Old Mission Peninsula, Michigan, United States
Chateau Grand Traverse is a winery on the Old Mission Peninsula in northern Michigan, set on gently rolling land that slopes toward the shores of Lake Michigan. The property has a tasting room, a retail shop, and an outdoor terrace from which you can see the surrounding vineyards and water.
The O'Keefe family opened this winery in 1974, making it one of the first commercial wine operations in northern Michigan. Their choice to plant vinifera grapes, rather than native hybrids, set a direction that other local producers later followed.
The Old Mission Peninsula sits almost exactly on the 45th parallel, the same latitude as parts of Bordeaux and Burgundy, which locals often mention with pride. Visitors can taste this geography directly in the glass during a tasting at the property.
The winery is easiest to reach by car, as the peninsula has no public transport and the roads are rural. Tasting sessions are available on site, and booking ahead is a good idea on busy summer weekends.
Alongside grape wines, the winery produces cherry wine made from fruit grown on the same peninsula, where cherry orchards have been part of the landscape for generations. This makes a visit here also a way to taste a fruit that defines the local farming identity as much as grapes do.
