Chattanooga National Cemetery, Military cemetery in Chattanooga, United States.
Chattanooga National Cemetery occupies a hilltop site with expansive grounds laid out in formal rows of grave markers. The layout guides visitors through shaded areas and open sections, with views across the surrounding landscape from various points throughout the grounds.
The cemetery was established in 1863 following the fighting near Chattanooga during the Civil War and has served as a burial ground ever since. Over time it became an important place for remembering those who died during the conflict.
The cemetery contains the Andrews Raiders Monument with a bronze locomotive replica, commemorating the participants of the Great Locomotive Chase.
Visitors can explore the grounds on foot from sunrise to sunset, as the main area is accessible along paved paths. The site is large enough that comfortable walking shoes are helpful, and you may want to allow time to move between different sections.
The main entrance features a stone archway with classical columns, one of very few such structures that survives at Southern burial grounds. This gateway remains one of the site's most striking architectural elements.
