Clarence B. Moore House, Historic residence in Washington Square West, Philadelphia, United States.
The Clarence B. Moore House is a three-story brick building at the corner of Locust and South Juniper Streets in Philadelphia, with a steep slate roof, Gothic arched openings, and a circular tower. The structure sits between South 13th and South Broad Streets and features an elaborately designed facade combining several different materials and architectural details.
Architect Wilson Eyre designed the house in 1890 for the wealthy businessman Clarence Bloomfield Moore, who later became a recognized archaeologist. Moore focused his scholarly work on investigating Native American sites throughout the Southeast.
The residence combines architectural styles from different European traditions, reflecting how wealthy late 19th-century homeowners admired and adapted foreign design influences. Visitors can see today how Venetian loggias, rusticated limestone details, and references to Loire Valley chateaux sit side by side on the same building.
The building stands on a prominent corner and is easy to spot from the street thanks to its distinctive architecture and tower. The surrounding area offers good walking conditions and numerous opportunities to explore other historic buildings in this central Philadelphia neighborhood.
The building retained its original exterior materials, including the carefully worked brickwork and stone details, which led to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The projecting walled steps along the facade are an unusual feature that sets this structure apart from other homes in the neighborhood.
