College of New Rochelle, Private Catholic college in New Rochelle, United States.
The College of New Rochelle was a private higher education institution located on an expansive campus in the city. The grounds featured approximately 20 buildings, including the striking Leland Castle, a gothic revival structure built in the 1800s.
The school was founded in 1904 by Mother Irene Gill of the Ursuline Order and was the first Catholic women's college in New York State. The institution operated for over a century before closing in 2019.
The institution maintained multiple academic schools offering degrees in arts, sciences, nursing, and education until its closure in 2019.
The campus sat north of Manhattan and was equipped with various sports facilities, including a modern wellness center with a swimming pool and basketball courts. Visitors could walk the grounds easily, with historic buildings spread throughout the property.
The property was acquired by the New York Trustees of the Masonic Hall and Asylum Fund following the closure, giving the site a new direction. This unexpected transfer to a nonprofit Masonic organization showed the various paths abandoned institutions can take for revival.
