Culbertson Mansion, French Empire mansion in New Albany, US.
The Culbertson Mansion extends over 20,000 square feet with 25 rooms across three floors, featuring marble fireplaces and hand-painted ceilings throughout the structure.
William Culbertson, the wealthiest man in Indiana, commissioned this residence in 1867 for $120,000, which architects James T. Banes completed in 1869.
The mansion displays the social status of 19th-century American industrialists through its architectural elements, imported materials, and need for 30 household staff.
Guided tours of the mansion include access to formal parlors, dining rooms, bedrooms, kitchen, and laundry facilities, presenting period furniture and family artifacts.
The original tin roof materials came from Scotland, while a private railroad line ran behind the property connecting the mansion to downtown New Albany.
