Culbertson Mansion, French Empire mansion in New Albany, US.

The Culbertson Mansion is a Second Empire residence in New Albany with three stories containing numerous rooms for family and household staff. Inside, visitors find marble fireplaces, hand-painted ceilings, and period furnishings throughout the home.

William Culbertson, Indiana's wealthiest man, commissioned the house in 1867 and architects James T. Banes completed it in 1869. The building became a symbol of his economic success and regional prominence.

The house shows how wealthy industrialists of the 19th century lived and the value they placed on craftsmanship. Visitors can see the imported materials and elaborate details that reflected the family's wealth and influence.

Visitors explore the home on guided tours that show the parlors, bedrooms, kitchen, and living areas. It is helpful to wear comfortable shoes since the tours cover multiple floors and many rooms.

The roof was originally covered with tiles imported from Scotland, showing Culbertson's commitment to quality materials from abroad. A private railroad line ran behind the property, connecting it directly to downtown.
