The structure was built around 1800 by David Mathews, a Continental Army veteran. It gained National Register of Historic Places recognition in 1979 for its significance in early American architecture.
The house preserves original Federal-period craftsmanship in its wooden panels, fireplace borders, and door frames. These elements reflect how people of that time valued handmade details in their homes.
The house sits on Route 67 between Hoosick, New York and Shaftsbury, Vermont. The property spans several acres and offers access from both states.
The building once served as a tavern where court proceedings took place. An unusual rule prevented New York judges from issuing convictions on the Vermont side.
