Elgin Area Historical Society

The Elgin Area Historical Society occupies an 1856 Greek Revival building called Old Main at 360 Park Street. The two-story structure contains permanent exhibits along with research facilities housing documents and artifacts from the region.

The building dates to 1856 and originally served as part of an early educational institution. A lightning strike in 1911 caused significant damage, leading to reconstruction of the original roof and cupola.

The collection documents the Elgin National Watch Company's influence on local life and industry. These exhibits reveal how watchmaking shaped the community's growth and identity.

The museum offers guided tours and allows visitors to use research facilities during regular business hours. Plan time to explore both floors and examine the collection thoroughly.

An annual cemetery walk at Bluff City Cemetery features performers portraying notable past residents of the area. This event brings historical figures to life through living interpretation and dramatic storytelling.
