Facultad de Derecho Eugenio Maria de Hostos, Law school in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico.
The Facultad de Derecho Eugenio Maria de Hostos is a law school housed in a 1924 building designed by architect Rafael Carmoega at the corner of Peral and Muñoz Rivera streets in Mayagüez. The structure displays the architectural style typical of that era with its defining features.
The school was founded in 1995 by Fernando Bayrón, Juan Mari Brás, and Carlos Rivera Lugo to provide legal education in Mayagüez. It closed its doors in 2013 after graduating approximately 900 students.
The school was named after a prominent Puerto Rican educator and reflected its founders' commitment to training lawyers who understood and served local communities. The name itself represented an educational tradition that connected practical knowledge with social responsibility.
The building sits at a central location in Mayagüez where two main streets intersect, making it easy to find. Visitors can view the structure's exterior, even though its interior now serves other purposes.
The building was transformed in 2020 into a support center for crime victims, serving a completely different purpose than originally intended. This reuse shows how the community adapted the historical structure to meet new needs.
