José de Diego Building, historic building at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez
The José de Diego Building is an early 20th-century university structure in Mayagüez designed in Spanish Revival style. It features two main floors with a central section that rises into a tower decorated with railings and small turrets.
Built between 1913 and 1916 as a science center, the structure initially housed classrooms, a library, and office space. A tower with a working clock was added in 1921 and remains a distinctive feature.
The building bears the name of José de Diego, an important figure in Puerto Rican history and education. This naming choice reflects how the campus honors those who shaped local learning and development.
The building is accessible during university hours and visitors can admire its exterior and walk through open areas. Respectful behavior is appreciated as the site remains an active part of campus operations.
Inside the tower sits a carillon, a set of bells that rings out melodies across campus through external openings. This bell system connects visitors to an older tradition of the institution.
