Fish Creek Island, River island in Marshall County, West Virginia
Fish Creek Island is a river island situated in the Ohio River between Captina and Moundsville with a football-shaped form spanning approximately 48 acres. The landmass supports wetland vegetation and serves as a stopping point for migrating birds along the river corridor.
Oil extraction operations took place on the island during the early 1900s before Consol Energy acquired it in 1956 with unrealized coal mining plans. Transfer to the Nature Conservancy and later to the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge established its protected status today.
The Nature Conservancy received Fish Creek Island as a donation, later transferring it to the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge for preservation purposes.
Visitors can access the island through a public access site located south of Moundsville along State Route 2. The protected status of the site means visitors should follow any regulations posted at the access point and respect wildlife in the area.
The island contains one of West Virginia's largest breeding colonies of great blue herons with several hundred nests. This bird colony makes the location a significant breeding ground for large wading birds in the region.
