Olmaliq, Mining center in Tashkent Region, Uzbekistan.
Olmaliq is a city in Tashkent Region situated along the northern slopes of the Qurama Mountains, with the Ohangaron River running through its valley. The settlement sits at an altitude of 585 meters and spreads across a landscape defined by both industrial activity and mountain terrain.
Olmaliq was established in 1951 and grew from settlements that formed around rich mineral deposits including copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver. Its founding was tied to Soviet-era industrialization efforts aimed at exploiting the region's natural resources.
The name derives from Uzbek language, meaning Apple Grove, due to numerous wild apple trees that previously populated the valley.
The city is accessible to visitors, though entry to many industrial facilities is restricted. It helps to know the climate here is quite dry, and the surrounding mountains serve as helpful orientation landmarks.
The metallurgical complex JSC Almalyk MMC employs around 25,000 workers and stands as one of the largest nonferrous metal processing facilities in Central Asia. This industrial facility processes copper, molybdenum, lead, and zinc sourced from regional mining operations.
