Samanid Mausoleum

The Samanid Mausoleum presents a symmetrical cube structure topped with a dome, built entirely from kiln-dried bricks arranged in detailed geometric patterns.

The mausoleum, constructed in the late ninth century, served as the final resting place for Ismail Samani, his father, and grandson during the Samanid dynasty.

The structure combines architectural elements from Soghdian, Persian, and Islamic traditions, marking a significant development in Central Asian building techniques.

Visitors can access the mausoleum throughout the year in the northwestern section of Bukhara, where natural light enhances the intricate brickwork patterns.

Sand and mud preserved this structure for centuries after the Mongol invasion of 1220, protecting it until its rediscovery in the early twentieth century.
