Auyantepui, Sandstone mountain in Canaima National Park, Venezuela
Auyantepui is a sandstone mountain in Canaima National Park whose summit rises to about 2,450 meters. The vertical cliff faces reach up to 1,000 meters high, creating one of the region's most striking natural formations.
An American pilot named Jimmie Angel discovered a waterfall at the mountain's steep cliffs in 1933 while searching for gold ore. The waterfall was later named after him and drew worldwide attention to this remote location.
The Pemón people have called this place Auyan Tepui for generations, which means "Devil's House" in their language. The name reflects how deeply this community connects with this distinctive landmark.
Visitors reach this mountain through guided trekking tours starting from Santa Elena, with charter flights to Kavak village easing access. It is important to prepare for challenging terrain and changing weather conditions.
The mountain is home to more than 20 species of amphibians and reptiles that have adapted over millions of years to its isolated highland location. These creatures exist nowhere else on Earth.
