Güigüe Abbey, Benedictine abbey in Güigüe, Venezuela.
Güigüe Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in the town of Güigüe, in the Venezuelan state of Carabobo. The complex sits near the southern shore of Lake Valencia and includes a church, a central courtyard, and residential quarters for the monastic community.
The monastic community was founded in Caracas in the early 20th century and spent several decades in the capital. Urban growth eventually pushed the monks to relocate to Güigüe in 1990, where they established the current site.
The community follows the Rule of Saint Benedict, which divides the day into prayer, work, and reading. Visitors who attend one of the prayer services can hear the monks chant together in a way that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
The abbey is located along the road between Valencia and Güigüe, and a personal vehicle is the most practical way to get there. It is worth contacting the monastery in advance, as access for outside visitors may be limited to certain times of day.
Although the Benedictines have deep roots in Europe, the community in Güigüe is one of very few Benedictine houses in all of Venezuela. The monastery farms land around the site, and that work is part of daily monastic life rather than a separate activity.
