Las Delicias Zoo, Zoological park in Maracay, Venezuela
Las Delicias Zoo is a zoological park on the northern side of Maracay, in the state of Aragua, Venezuela, with green grounds divided into separate animal areas. It houses primates, big cats, reptiles, birds, and large hoofed animals, each group kept in its own section of the park.
The site began in 1915 as a private animal collection and opened to the public in 1919, becoming the first zoological institution in Venezuela. That shift from private to public shaped the way the country approached the display and care of wild animals for decades to come.
The name Las Delicias means "the delights" in Spanish, which reflects the experience many visitors associate with seeing animals up close for the first time. Families with children make up a large part of the daily crowd, and weekends tend to draw people from across the Aragua region.
The park is open every day, and visitors move through the different animal areas on foot along paved paths. Given the warm climate, wearing comfortable shoes and carrying water will make the visit much more enjoyable.
In 1975, the zoo recorded the first documented birth of spectacled bears in any Venezuelan zoological institution. The spectacled bear is native to the Andes and is generally considered one of the harder species to breed in a zoo setting, which made this event particularly notable.
