Las Delicias Zoo, Zoological park in Maracay, Venezuela
Las Delicias Zoo is a zoological facility on the northern side of Maracay featuring multiple animal enclosures spread across landscaped grounds. It displays primates, birds, reptiles, big cats, and large hoofed animals in separate habitats designed for different species.
The facility began in 1915 as a private animal collection and opened to the public in 1919 as Venezuela's first such institution. This transition from private to public access shaped how the country approached wildlife display and education.
The name reflects the joy that visitors experience watching animals in their habitats. Today, people come to observe wildlife from different regions and connect with nature in this green space.
The park is open seven days a week with walking paths connecting the different animal areas throughout the grounds. Comfortable footwear and plenty of water are helpful for exploring at your own pace in the warm climate.
The zoo achieved the first documented breeding of spectacled bears within a Venezuelan zoological institution in 1975. This success demonstrated that the species could reproduce successfully under proper care conditions.
