San Bernardino, Parish district in Libertador Municipality, Caracas, Venezuela.
San Bernardino is a parish in Libertador Municipality, Caracas, situated on elevated terrain in the northeastern part of the city. The area mixes residential streets with banking institutions and cultural facilities, all within a short distance of each other.
The area was once covered by coffee plantations and country estates belonging to wealthy families during the colonial era. From the 1940s onward, rapid urban growth replaced those rural properties with the streets and buildings that stand today.
The Museo de Arte Colonial, housed in the old Quinta Anauco estate, displays furniture, paintings and everyday objects from the colonial period. Walking through its rooms gives a clear sense of how wealthy families in Caracas lived centuries ago.
Because the district sits on higher ground, comfortable shoes help when walking the streets, some of which rise noticeably. The main points of interest are close to one another and easy to cover on foot.
The Quinta Anauco, which houses the colonial art museum, is one of the few surviving country houses from the 18th century still standing in Caracas. It sits inside a garden with old trees that form a strong contrast to the surrounding city.
