Sa Pa

Located at 1600 meters elevation, Sa Pa extends across steep terrains with rice terraces carved into mountainsides near the Hoang Lien Son range.

The French military established Sa Pa as an outpost in the 1880s, later developing it into a mountain retreat due to its moderate climate.

The district houses multiple ethnic groups including Hmong, Dao, Giay, Xa Pho, and Tay communities, each maintaining their traditional clothing and customs.

Visitors reach Sa Pa via overnight trains or buses from Hanoi to Lao Cai, followed by a mountain transfer through winding roads to the town center.

During winter months, Sa Pa experiences rare snowfall events, with significant accumulations recorded in 1983, 2000, 2011, and 2016.
