Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, Ethnographic museum in Cau Giay district, Hanoi, Vietnam
Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is an ethnographic museum in Cau Giay district, Hanoi, displaying more than fifteen thousand objects from fifty-four ethnic groups across the country, including clothing, tools and ritual items. The collection spreads across indoor galleries and an outdoor garden where life-size traditional houses stand.
The institution opened in 1997 under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences to preserve ethnic cultures. Research and documentation of ethnic minorities remain central to its work today.
The museum features outdoor exhibitions of traditional houses, including authentic stilt dwellings and communal buildings representing different ethnic architectural styles.
The museum stands on Nguyen Van Huyen Street and opens from Tuesday to Sunday between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM, with labels in Vietnamese, English and French. The outdoor garden with houses requires comfortable footwear and takes at least half an hour to explore.
Eleven traditional buildings in the garden can be entered from the inside and show original interiors from different ethnic groups. Some houses were built on site by craftsmen from those communities.
