Aden Governorate, Administrative division in southern Yemen
Aden Governorate is an administrative region in southern Yemen that stretches along the Arabian Sea coast. The territory consists of several districts organized around a major port city that connects regional trade routes.
The region was under British rule from 1839 until 1967, then served as the center of South Yemen before reunification with the north in 1990. This lengthy period of external governance shaped its development and infrastructure.
The administrative structure of Aden Governorate reflects traditional Yemeni governance systems through multiple tiers of districts, sub-districts, and village organizations.
The region holds significant importance as a maritime hub connecting shipping lanes between Asia and Europe through its port facilities. Travel within the area requires awareness of local conditions and advisories before visiting.
In 2004, the Socotra archipelago was transferred away from this region to the neighboring Hadhramaut Governorate. This change significantly altered the territory's composition.
