Ta'izz

Ta'izz is a highland city in southwestern Yemen situated at 1,400 meters above sea level along the northern foot of Mount Subr. Multistory houses and ancient mosques define its urban character and layout.

The Ayyubids founded the city in 1175 as their capital and made it an important administrative center. The Rasulid dynasty later took control and maintained its significance until the 15th century.

The city is known for its religious structures, including the Al-Mudhaffariyyah Mosque and the Cairo Citadel, which shape the urban landscape and draw visitors. These buildings reflect the spiritual importance the place holds for local communities.

The city functions as a transportation hub with all-weather roads connecting to Mocha on the Red Sea coast, Sanaa in the north, and Aden. Visitors should be aware of the high elevation and prepare accordingly for the altitude.

The region is Yemen's primary coffee cultivation area and also produces khat leaves and various agricultural crops. This farming tradition is deeply rooted in the local economy and regional identity.
