Dhulikhel, human settlement
Dhulikhel is a hilltop town in Nepal's Kavrepalanchok District, surrounded by green hills and overlooking snow-capped Himalayan peaks. Narrow lanes wind past old stone and wood houses with simple carvings, several temples including the Bhagwati Temple with gilt-decorated roofs and the Narayanthan Temple with three golden tiers.
Dhulikhel was an important trading post over 500 years ago on the route to Tibet, where merchants exchanged goods and shared ideas. Originally known as Shrikhandapur and rooted in Buddhist tradition, it later became a center of Hindu faith, with both cultures remaining visible today in its architecture and sacred sites.
Dhulikhel carries its name from its Buddhist past as Shrikhandapur and still shows both Hindu and Buddhist influences in its temples and shrines. Daily life centers on slow rhythms, shared meals at markets, and the practice of old traditions that come alive in festivals with music and offerings.
Dhulikhel is easily reached by bus from Kathmandu, with a ride taking about an hour through rural scenery. The town has simple guesthouses and more comfortable lodging near the main highway, and visitors should carry enough cash as there is only one ATM in the area.
The sunrise over Himalayan peaks is particularly striking, and many visitors stay overnight to experience the early morning light. Mountain biking trails lead from town to nearby Namobuddha, a hilltop shrine located about three hours away on foot.
