SM Megamall, Shopping center in Mandaluyong, Philippines.
SM Megamall is a large shopping center in Mandaluyong that extends across several interconnected buildings and houses more than four hundred stores, restaurants, cinemas and entertainment facilities. The entire complex covers around 474,000 square meters (about 51 million square feet) with different zones for fashion, electronics, household goods and entertainment.
The site was developed in the late 1980s when the first construction phase began with a one billion peso loan financed by Philippine National Bank and Citibank. It opened in June 1991 and established the complex as one of Southeast Asia's largest retail centers at that time.
The name comes from shoe entrepreneur Henry Sy, whose initials SM stood for his early stores and later grew into the country's largest retail chain. Today families come here for weekends, meet friends in cafés or spend whole afternoons moving between floors.
Building C contains an integrated transport terminal that provides connections to various public transit options across Metro Manila. The different sections are linked by pedestrian bridges and covered walkways, making it easy to move between areas even during rainy weather.
An Olympic-sized ice skating rink sits inside and served as a competition venue during the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. Outside stands a time sculpture by Filipino-American artist Jefre Manuel Figueras that portrays modern urban life in Metro Manila.
