Payatas, Administrative barangay in Quezon City, Philippines.
Payatas is an administrative barangay in the eastern part of Quezon City with densely packed residential neighborhoods and shops throughout. The area includes family homes, small businesses, and essential services woven throughout its neighborhoods.
The area was first transferred from San Mateo in Rizal to Quezon City back in 1949. Its formal establishment as a barangay came later in 1976, creating the administrative division that exists today.
Multiple ethnic communities including Ilokano, Pangasinan, and Tagalog speakers live side by side here. Their traditions shape the local celebrations, food, and how neighbors interact with each other daily.
Jeepneys and tricycles are the main ways to get around this area for daily trips. These vehicles link neighborhoods to shops and connect to other parts of Quezon City without much hassle.
The name comes from the Tagalog words 'payat sa taas,' referring to the soil that made growing rice impossible here. This soil condition shaped how the area developed instead into a residential and commercial zone.
