Ramkot Fort

Ramkot Fort is a stone structure built on a steep hill where the Jhelum and Poonch rivers once met, now submerged beneath Mangla Lake. The fortress sits at a high point that once controlled river crossings and overlooked the surrounding valley.

The fort was built in the 16th and 17th centuries by Muslim rulers of Kashmir as part of their military strategy. It served as a key outpost for controlling river routes in the region.

Two water reservoirs inside show how residents managed water storage to support the garrison over long periods. This reflects the practical thinking that shaped how the fortress operated daily.

The site is only accessible by boat since water surrounds it; expect about 10 minutes from Mangla Dam to reach it. Plan your visit based on water levels and weather, as high water may limit access to certain areas.

The fort has numerous ramps running along its walls that once held cannons at different heights during combat. This ramped design was a clever way to position firearms across several levels for stronger defense.
