Lagoa do Canário, crater lake
Lagoa do Canário is a volcanic crater lake in the Azores. The water sits within a deep bowl-shaped depression, with steep slopes rising all around and covered in thick green vegetation.
The lake formed from a volcanic eruption that created a crater, which gradually filled with water over time. Its existence reflects the geologically active history of the Azores archipelago.
The site is easiest to visit during drier months when walking paths are less slippery underfoot. Wear good hiking shoes and bring layers, as weather here can change quickly throughout the day.
The lake supports a rare plant community adapted to volcanic conditions and island climate. This specialized vegetation makes it a spot of botanical interest for those observant enough to notice it.
