Recreational Forest Reserve of Pinhal da Paz, Protected forest reserve on São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal
The Pinhal da Paz is a protected forest reserve on Sao Miguel Island covering 49 hectares with varied landscapes and native plant species. The terrain spans altitudes between 240 and 330 meters with different types of vegetation zones.
The area was originally called Mata das Criaciones and was inherited by Antonio do Canto Brum. He transformed the volcanic terrain into a cultivated park by planting pines and ornamental species.
The forest serves as a place where visitors can experience local plant life and learn about conservation directly through marked trails. Educational signs along the paths explain the ecosystem and why this area matters for the island.
The reserve has 15 kilometers of marked trails, exercise stations, picnic areas, and parking available for visitors. The paths offer different walking options and the site is generally easy to navigate and access.
The forest was equipped from its early days with specialized rainwater collection points. These systems continue to function and water the diverse plant species throughout the reserve.
