Convento de São Francisco

The Convento de São Francisco stands on the left bank of the Mondego River and combines Gothic and Manueline architectural styles throughout its structure. The renovated complex includes a modern auditorium, multiple event and exhibition spaces, and facilities for meetings and gatherings.

The convent was founded in the early 16th century and served as a hospital, military headquarters, and textile factory before being comprehensively renovated in 2010. This transformation reflected changing needs across centuries.

The convent functions as a cultural center today, hosting theater performances, concerts, and art exhibitions year-round. Visitors encounter a space where religious rooms have been transformed into venues for contemporary artistic expression.

The restoration project, designed by architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça, carefully blended the original architecture with contemporary facilities without overwhelming either aspect. This balancing act created a space where centuries of design coexist naturally.
