Pico Ruivo, Protected mountain peak in Santana, Portugal.

Pico Ruivo is a protected mountain peak on Madeira that rises to about 1,860 meters and is marked by rocky terrain throughout. The ascent leads through the island's central mountain region and includes several rest areas along the established path.

The area received protected status in 1982 to preserve the natural environment and safeguard local plant and animal species. This action was part of Portugal's broader effort to secure Madeira's natural landscapes for future generations.

The mountain takes its name from the reddish rock tones that become especially visible during sunrise and sunset. Local people have referenced these colors in their stories and descriptions of the landscape for generations.

The main trail begins at the Achada do Teixeira parking area and offers a well-maintained route with safety railings throughout. The paths are clearly marked, making navigation straightforward even for less experienced hikers.

On clear days, the summit offers views of both Madeira's northern and southern coasts, which makes such expansive perspectives uncommon from a single location. Cloud formations shift throughout the day, creating different visibility conditions and changing what can be seen at any given moment.
