Pico das Pedras

Pico das Pedras is a mountain campground situated at around 900 meters elevation within the Laurissilva Forest, providing direct access to hiking trails and observation areas. The site offers designated parking spaces, picnic tables, and rest stops along marked paths leading toward Pico Ruivo.

The surrounding Laurissilva Forest was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999 due to its ecological importance and ancient tree species. This recognition reflects the forest's status as one of the last remaining subtropical laurel forest ecosystems.

The Queimadas shelter displays traditional Madeiran building style with its thatched roof and regional construction methods that reflect local heritage. People visiting the area learn about how mountain communities have lived in harmony with the surrounding forest for centuries.

The site is equipped with water, sanitary facilities, and rest areas that provide basic amenities to visitors. It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear and prepare for changing weather conditions, as mountain elevations can be unpredictable.

The site holds a rare mix of endemic Madeiran plant species alongside trees from temperate regions of Europe, Asia, and America. This botanical variety demonstrates how different climate zones can coexist on a single mountain terrain.
