Teleférico Rocha do Navio, Cable car system in Santana, Portugal
Teleférico Rocha do Navio is an aerial tramway that descends 800 meters from Santana to a landing platform on the coastal cliffs of northern Madeira. The cable car runs across open air and covers the vertical drop between the plateau and the shoreline below.
Built in 1997, the cable car was created to allow farmers access to their plots on the coastal cliffs. This infrastructure enabled the continuation of agricultural work in these hard-to-reach territories.
The cable car represents the connection between Madeiran agricultural traditions and modern transportation methods, enabling local farmers to maintain their cultivation practices.
Access is limited to specific operating times, so visitors should check in advance when the cable car is running. The ascent begins from the upper platform on the plateau side, and the ride itself takes just a few minutes.
At the lower landing point lies a protected natural reserve where vertical cliffs meet the ocean directly. This area gives visitors rare views of the coastal landscape that would normally be inaccessible from the plateau above.
