Al Thumama Stadium, Football stadium in Al Thumama district, Qatar.
Al Thumama Stadium is a football arena in the Al Thumama district south of Doha, Qatar, with a circular outer facade formed by white panels arranged in delicate patterns. Inside, seating areas spread across several tiers surrounding the pitch, holding 40,000 people in total.
Construction began in 2016 and the facility opened in October 2021 as one of the last venues completed for the 2022 World Cup. It hosted eight matches during the tournament, including group stage games and one round-of-sixteen fixture.
The name Thumama comes from a thorny desert plant native to the Qatari landscape, which Bedouins have used for various practical purposes for centuries. The geometric pattern on the facade recalls the weaving techniques still applied today in making traditional headwear.
The arena sits about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) south of central Doha and can be reached by several road connections and the metro line. Parking areas are available around the site, but public transit offers a more practical option on match days.
After the tournament, the upper half of the seating areas will be removed and the recovered materials are planned for reuse in other sports projects. The remaining facility will then house both a medical center and a small hotel.
