Cinciș Lake, Barrier lake in Poiana Rusca Mountains, Romania.
Cinciș Lake is a barrier lake in the Poiana Rusca Mountains covering 867 hectares with a maximum depth of 48 meters. Multiple sandy beaches line its shores, providing places for swimming and relaxation along the Hunedoara region.
The lake was created in 1962 when a dam was built, flooding five villages including the original Cinciș settlement. The settlement contained a church that had been standing since 1360 before it was submerged.
The name Cinciș comes from five legendary protectors who, according to local stories, once defended their king from attacks in the area. This tale shapes how people in the region understand their place and its origins.
The shoreline has several lodging options including three motels, two camping areas, and various guesthouses to suit different needs. These facilities make it straightforward to plan a visit or longer stay.
When water levels drop, remnants of the submerged medieval church become visible near the dam's edge. This unexpected emergence of structures from the area's past captures the attention of visitors exploring the site's hidden history.
