Limes Alutanus, Roman frontier fortification system in Dacia, Romania

Description

The Limes Alutanus is a Roman frontier defense system that runs along the Olt River in Dacia and consists of several fortified camps, watchtowers, and defensive walls. The archaeological remains spread across different locations and reveal the military infrastructure of this ancient border region.

History

The Romans built this defensive line starting in the 2nd century to secure the eastern border of Dacia against intruders. Over time, the installations were expanded and rebuilt multiple times to meet changing military needs.

Culture

The fortification system shows how Romans protected their borders and what role this line played in controlling the region militarily. Visitors can still see how soldiers organized their camps and monitored river crossings in those times.

Practical

The remains are located at several sites such as Boița, Câlineni, and Călimănești and are accessible to visitors. Joining guided tours helps you better understand the layout and significance of the different locations.
