Limes Alutanus

The Limes Alutanus extends along the Olt River with a series of fortified camps, watchtowers, and defensive walls spanning multiple settlements.

Emperor Hadrian commissioned this strategic defense line in the 2nd century CE to protect the eastern border of Roman Dacia against external invasions.

The fortification system demonstrates Roman military engineering through its network of seven major castra, including Pons Vetus, Praetorium, and Arutela.

Archaeological remains of the Roman camps are accessible in several locations, including Boița, Câlineni, and Călimănești, with guided tours available.

The defensive line incorporates a vallum constructed from north to south, featuring distinct architectural elements from different periods of Roman occupation.
