Kopaonik, Mountain range in southwestern Serbia.
Kopaonik is a mountain range in southwestern Serbia that extends roughly 75 kilometers with dramatic granite ridges running through it. The highest point is Pančić Peak at about 2017 meters, while slopes descend to lower elevations around 1650 meters where the resort begins.
Roman miners first opened operations here, establishing a tradition of extraction that continued for centuries and shaped the region's economy. The intensive mineral harvesting was so central to life here that the area became known locally as Silver Mountain.
The mountain's name comes from the Serbian word 'kopati', meaning to dig, reflecting centuries of mining tradition in this region. This heritage shaped how locals view and use the landscape, turning extraction work into a core part of the area's identity.
This destination works best from November through March when snow conditions are reliable and the ski season is in full operation. Visitors should prepare for cold temperatures and bring appropriate winter gear, as the high elevation creates weather changes throughout the day.
The national park area is home to rare plant species found nowhere else, including the Kopaonik houseleek and Kopaonik violet that thrive only at these high elevations. These botanical oddities make a quiet walk through certain sections reveal nature's engineering in how plants adapt to harsh mountain life.
